We’re older and wiser and we’ve had adventures and fun.

By the time you reach 40 you may feel that you finally have an effective skin care routine. You’ve had years and years to practice right? Take note – the hormonal changes that occur in your 40s will require some simple adjustments to ensure you cruise through the decade with a youthful glow. Hormonal changes are common at this age and wreak havoc in your skin due to the decline in estrogen. Hormones directly affect the function of key cells in the skin, such as fibroblasts (which produces collagen, elastin and keratinocytes that aid in skin protection). Confusing I know!

While hormonal changes may be gradual, many women may notice an increase in lines around the eyes, forehead and mouth. Brown spots may also start to occur and by your mid 40s there may be an increase in facial hair. As if we don’t have enough to deal with, the peri-menopausal years may also trigger skin growths on the face and body that start as small, rough bumps which can thicken over time becoming impossible to hide with makeup.

This all seems daunting right? Don’t worry, follow these tips to ensure you that your skin stays clear and healthy.

Regular cleansing – is an essential step to care for skin at 40. It is necessary to wash your face twice a day, in the morning when you wake and at night before bed, to remove the natural oils produced by the sebaceous glands and prevent make-up residues accumulating in the face.

Use sunscreen – it is essential now that your skin begins to suffer the ravages of dryness. Protect your face with a sunscreen to prevent UV from damaging your dermis or developing blemishes. Unprotected exposure to the sun’s harmful rays is a major cause of premature ageing.

Manage excess oils with exfoliation – excess oils can occur in the face during this decade. Try a medical microdermabrasion treatment to remove contaminant residues that accumulate in the pores. Regular exfoliation with a suitable product may also help to maintain healthy skin. This is a surefire way to achieve a smooth and radiant complexion.

Schedule regular skin care treatments – At 40 dark spots and extra facial fuzz can start appear. Consider Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments to rid you of these unwanted “extras”.
