Myths

I can’t help but have a little giggle at a few of the suggestions that come up online for taking care of skin, particularly acne. Here are our favourites:

 

1. Toothpaste works to prevent or quickly heal a pimple.

Sorry everyone, this is definitely not true! There are no ingredients in any toothpaste that can have a positive effect on acne or change a blemish once you have it. In fact, you may very well make it worse. The bacteria in your mouth and pores are different, which is why the products used for each a different.

 

2. Blackheads relate to cleanliness and can be scrubbed away.

Wrong! While blackheads may make your skin look dirty, they are unrelated to dirt. Blackheads form when hormones cause too much sebum to be produced, dead skin cells get int the way and the path for the oil is blocked. The mixture of oil and cellular debris oxidizes and turns black once it reaches the surface of your skin. Instead of scrubbing, try using a product containing BHA (salicylic acid) as it will exfoliate inside the pore lining, dissolving oil and dead skin cells.

 

3. If you clean your face better you can clear up your acne.

While we’re talking about scrubbing your skin, this is wrong. In fact, over-cleaning your face can actually make your skin worse as it triggers inflammation that makes acne worse. See a skin specialist to find the best option for you.

 

4. You’ll eventually outgrow acne.

Sorry, this one is sadly false. Unfortunately, not everyone who had acne as a teenager will grow out of it and not everyone who was lucky enough to avoid acne as a teenager has missed it altogether. Feel free to shake your fists in anger at hormones!

 

5. Wearing sunscreen will aggravate acne.

If you skip the sunscreen, you may find you’ll be dealing with worse skin problems. Just make sure you pick the right sunscreen.
